The application deadline for exchange students to the University of Helsinki, and the Swedish School of Social Science (Soc&kom) for the academic year 2014-2015 or fall 2014 is May 15th (EU) or April 15th (outside of EU).

The application deadline is final, meaning that late applications will not be considered. The on-line application form for exchange students and application information for exchange students are available on the Internet address http://sockom.helsinki.fi/international/applinfo.html.

Students who plan to come through the exchange agreements of the Soc&kom should tick Faculty of Social Sciences and the Swedish School of Social Science to make sure that your application really comes to us. The coordinators will need to sign the printed out application as to confirm that you nominate the student. After this the application and its attachments can either be scanned in and uploaded into the application database (preferred) or faxed or sent by mail to the university to the number +358-9-191 22176.

Our School offers education in six different major subjects:

Journalism, Legal Studies, Political Science, Sociology, Social Psychology and Psychology, Social Work and Social Policy. In addition, we offer education in four different thematic units: Communication and Opinion, Ethnic Relations, Gender, and Public Policy. Please visit our Internet pages for more information about our School http://sockom.helsinki.fi/english. In the fall of 2014 we are also offering a special module for students in journalism and communication called Foreign Reporting. More information on the module can be found on http://sockom.helsinki.fi/forrep/index.html . We also offer an interdisciplinary minor in Ethnic Relations (25 ECTS). See our webpage for more info on the minor.

Information about courses offered in English at our School and the University of Helsinki are available on our webpage:

http://sockom.helsinki.fi/international (left hand frame). Exchange students at the Swedish School of Social Science may choose courses from Soc&kom, from the Faculty of Social Sciences, Gender as well as regional studies, language courses in both Swedish and Finnish and also to some extent from other Faculties at the University of Helsinki. The information is continuously updated and a list of courses that will be offered in English at Soc&kom during the academic year 2014-2015 will be available online at the latest in late June.

Additions, cancellations and changes to courses may though occur.

Please use last year’s courses as a base for your Learning Agreement.

The students also need to apply for their housing directly through the housing company HOAS, http://www.hoas.fi/www/hoaswww.nsf/sp3?open&cid=exchangestudents. We strongly recommend the students to apply for housing at the same time as they apply for our University.

In addition the student should have good English or Swedish skills in order to be able to fulfill all the course obligations. The recommended skill level is B2 on the CEFR-scale.

Information on University of Helsinki for Exchange students can be found on http://www.helsinki.fi/exchange/. The webpage gives useful information on how to prepare for your stay in Helsinki.

The Orientation week for exchange students will be held approximately 27th to 28th of August, which means that exchange students should arrive in Helsinki already before those dates. We have two students working as international tutors who will make sure that the start will be as smooth as possible for all exchange students.

We recommend students who plan to come to our School as exchange students to contact us by e-mail to discuss their preliminary study plans. Many questions are however already answered here http://sockom.helsinki.fi/international/FAQ.html
