The purpose of the undergraduate study programme in Latin (double major) is to provide students with the key concepts of Latin language and literature as well as of ancient literature and civilization in order to enable them upon graduation to translate Latin texts into Croatian, interpret them and determine their historical context. Undergraduate students learn Latin from scratch, therefore no previous knowledge of Latin is required to be enrolled in the study. Over a six-semester period students will have been taught morphology, syntax and stylistics of Latin language using texts of ancient authors in the original form and the complete collection of Latin literature. In addition, students will have acquired  knowledge of Greek and Roman history, religion, culture and civilisation. The study programme is modern and adjusted to the contemporary linguistic practices of foreign language acquisition. In the first year of study students are taught Latin morphosyntax and become acquainted with the characteristics of Latin philology and a part of Latin literature by reading selected works of Roman writers. In the second year of study students complete studying Latin syntax on the examples  of texts by Roman authors of the classical period and acquire knowledge of Latin literature written in  the same period. In the third year of study students are acquainted with stylistic characteristics of Latin language in different literary periods and genres and expand their knowledge on Latin literature and Patristics. During the undergraduate course students acquire knowledge of everyday life in ancient society as well, i.e. history, phlosophy, religion, culture and civilisation. The bachelor thesis is written during the sixth semester.
