Description:
- to acquaint students with basic demographic indicators and processes of development of the population of the Croatian island area
- explain students the modern demographic picture of the Croatian island area
- to develop students' knowledge of the peculiarities of the development of the island population
- to acquaint students with the causes and consequences of depopulation processes on Croatian islands
- explain the components and peculiarities of the identity of the Croatian island space
- explain students the developmental approaches to the management of Croatian island space

The subject contributes to:
- development of critical spatial thinking and understanding of specific demographic processes in Croatia
- training students to understand the causes and consequences of depopulation processes in Croatia on the example of island groups
- understanding the importance of Croatian island space in the context of civilization, culture and identity
- thinking about demographic development concepts and approaches to managing certain parts of Croatia
- training students to think critically about revitalization measures, goals and instruments in accordance with the demographic, historical and social development of the Croatian (island) area
- development and improvement of general demographic, analytical and graphic skills

After passing the course, students will be able to:
- define the term "islandness" and explain the basic demographic processes on Croatian islands
- explain the basic social, geographical and demographic conditions of the modern demographic picture of the Croatian island area
- define and explain the basic development problems of the Croatian island space
- interpret different approaches to the management of Croatian island space on the example of selected Croatian island groups
- explain the importance and manner of managing protected parts of the Croatian island area
- define the degree of demographic, spatial and developmental disparity of individual islands in accordance with the geographical position and relationship to the mainland
- apply relevant statistical and graphical methods in the process of reviewing and clarifying demographic patterns on islands

2. Understanding the concept of "island" in Croatia and the European Union.
3. Socio-demographic classification of the Croatian island area.
4. Spatial distribution and demographic differences of the Croatian island area.
5. Causes and consequences of depopulation processes on Croatian islands.
6. Factors of emigration from Croatian islands - historical, demographic and social overview.
7. Components of the identity of the Croatian island area.
8. Contemporary demographic characteristics of the Kvarner-Lošinj archipelago.
9. Contemporary demographic characteristics of the North Dalmatian archipelago.
10. Contemporary demographic characteristics of the Central Dalmatian archipelago.
11. Contemporary demographic characteristics of the South Dalmatian archipelago.
12. Development concepts of management of Croatian island area.
13. Development concepts of management of Croatian protected parts of island area.
14. Approaches to demographic revitalization of the Croatian island area - selected examples.
15. Determinants of Croatian island development and sustainability in strategic documents. Concluding remarks.

Hrvatski studiji Sveučilišta u Zagrebu pokrenuti su i ustrojeni 16. studenoga 1992., isprva samo kao dvosemestralni Sveučilišni komparativni studij hrvatske filozofije i društva. Taj je program potom preoblikovan u program redovitog četverogodišnjeg studija.
