Description: | |||||
The primary goal of this course is to offer students a comprehensive understanding of the contested nature of democracy and its development across diverse historical and cultural contexts. Through a series of lectures delivered by esteemed historians from Croatia and the United States, participants will explore pivotal moments and processes that have shaped the concept of democracy, ranging from its ancient roots to modern challenges. Students will engage with topics such as Tertullian's groundbreaking ideas on religious freedom, the revolutionary movements of 19th-century Europe, and the struggles for democratic governance in Africa and Southeast Asia. An interdisciplinary approach underpins the course, blending perspectives from political science, cultural studies, and history to provide a nuanced view of democracy's evolution. Students will analyze historical texts, reflect on key readings in weekly journals, and collaborate on discussions with their peers from both universities, fostering a dialogue between students and professors. |
