Department of Sociology

The undergraduate university study programme in sociology (single major) provides students with research methods and professional terminology specific to the field of sociology to the extent that enables them to secure professional employment in public and private institutions in the economic, political and cultural sphere. The ability to comprehend, investigate and interpret social processes, social values and a wide range of social actions is based on two essential groups of required courses which consist of theoretical and research-based content. These complement each other during the course of study and thus provide the requisite educational content of sociology. In addition to this, students are offered a range of elective courses which develop their competencies to apply newly-acquired skills in solving particular problems, as well as their ability to use a sociological way of thinking in comprehending and predicting global social processes. All of the above prepares the holders of the title University Bachelor of Arts in Sociology for a range of positions, not only those where tasks have previously been clearly specified but also those where creativity and problem solving are required. Finally, the undergraduate university study programme in sociology (single major) guarantees a sound foundation for the future intellectual development of students at the graduate or postgraduate level. The bachelor thesis is written during the sixth semester.
