at the Swedish School of Social Science, University of Helsinki

Foreign Reporting module (15 ECTS)
September - December 2017

Foreign Reporting as a minor (25-30 ECTS)
September - December 2017

Are you interested in international issues, politics of diversity and the challenges of foreign reporting? Do you study Journalism or Communication? Then the following module is something you have to experience!

The Foreign Reporting module is both a theoretical and practical module aimed at providing Journalism and/or Communication students with the conceptual framework and the practical skills needed to work as a foreign reporter on assignment. The module emphasizes international journalism, multiculturalism and ethnicity.

Exchange students staying the whole autumn term can choose additional classes up to 30 ECTS even if they do not take part in the minor.

The 15 ECTS Foreign Reporting module consists of three courses:

MEDIA LANDSCAPES AND JOURNALISM IN TRANSITION, 5 ECTS
The course will focus on the differences between types of media, including professional news media and social media; the new diversity in media platforms and outlets, and its consequences for journalism; and media policies and their underpinning expectations in regard to relations between media and democracy, and the tensions between actors in the media market.

ETHNICITY AND THE CHALLENGE OF DIVERSITY IN JOURNALISM AND MEDIA, 5 ECTS
This course will explore the role of the media in impacting upon personal identities and framing the politics of diversity in contemporary societies. Drawing upon mass communication research, cultural studies and social psychology the course will examine the means whereby the mass media may be partisan and biased in their representation of ethnic identities.

FOREIGN REPORTING IN PRACTICE, 5 ECTS
The course includes theory and practice of foreign reporting, using Finland as a laboratory environment. An intensive introduction to the target area (Baltic States with emphasis on Estonia) is provided before starting the practical assignment. The students travel to Estonia on a working assignment which will result in a report for newspaper, radio or television.

A compulsory orientation course for international students is organized at the start of term in the end of August/ beginning of September.

The module has no tuition fee.

16-18 students of Journalism and/or Communication are recruited through an admission process. Students are recruited nationally and internationally from the partner universities of the Swedish School of Social Science. deadline for exchange students: 15th May 2017 (EU), 15th of April (outside of EU)

Feedback from Foreign Reporting participants:

"As an overall experience; I enjoyed the different backgrounds of the teachers and the way it affected their teaching methods and approaches."

"It was a life and career changing course and experience, and I believe the more students who get to experience it, the better. The inclusive lessons I received should be taught to every journalist wanting to work in a multicultural society."

"I didn't know exactly what to expect but I am definitely happy with the choice I made. We learnt a lot, the relationship with classmates and professors is great. I would make the same decision again. It's an intensive course with amazing learning opportunities."

"It was an intense course with a perfect balance of theory and practice. It gave me lots of opportunities to reflect on my work as a journalist and get out of my comfort zone while working with other enthusiastic students."

"Being in a class where students are from all different parts of the world means we all learn different things from each other as well. I think these global perspectives are important in journalism and writing about different people and cultures so we know how to represent different communities and ethnicities fairly within the media."

"This is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for learning with amazing professors and great colleagues."

"The professional experience you get in the three months is probably better than what you get in a year."

"I feel like I am a better person and a better journalist now
