All teaching activities will be held in Croatian. However, foreign students in mixed groups will have the opportunity to attend additional office hours with the lecturer and teaching assistants in English to help master the course materials. Additionally, the lecturer will refer foreign students to the corresponding literature in English, as well as give them the possibility of taking the associated exams in English.

Description:
To provide a contemporary and historical overview and insight into the theoretical, psychological, neurolinguistic and sociological aspects on which glottodidactics as an interdisciplinary science is based.
Explain and judge glottodidactics problems and individual factors that directly affect the second language acquisition.
Discuss the process of second language acquisition in the context of other disciplines in the field of social sciences (psychology, pedagogy, sociology, demography) and humanities (linguistics, philosophy, history).

Learning outcomes at the level of the programme to which the course contributes:
To acquire and connect knowledge on the example of complex changes resulting from certain historical, social and economic processes and cultural movements that existed in the Croatian cultural space over a long period of time.
Evaluate historical facts and processes of national, European and world history and their problems of interpretation.
Recognize the interdisciplinary character of history and its relevance to other areas of knowledge and to promote a range of moral, social and cultural values.

Students will be able to:
1. Describe basic theories and concepts in the field of glottodidactics as an interdisciplinary science throughout history.
2. Critically judge psychological, neurolinguistic and sociological aspects in the field of glottodidactics.
3. Define communication competence.
4. Explain the process of first and second language acquisition and its historical development.
5. Explain and discuss individual factors of second language acquisition.
6. Identify similarities and differences between receptive and productive language skills in second language acquisition.
7. Differentiate research methods in second language acquisition.

Course content:
1. Introduction to the curriculum.
2. Key terms: first and second/foreign language acquisition.
3. First language acquisition.
4. Bilingualism and multilingualism.
5. Communication competence.
6. Neurolinguistic aspects of second language acquisition.
7. Psychological and applied linguistic aspects of second language acquisition.
8. Mental lexicon.
9. Individual factors of second language acquisition (definition, personality, temperament, aptitude).
10. Individual factors of second language acquisition (motivation, strategies, age factor, language anxiety).
11. Receptive and productive language skills: listening, reading, writing, speaking.
12. Sociolinguistic aspects of second language acquisition.
13. Language attrition.
14. Research methods in second language acquisition.
15. Repetition and systematization of knowledge.

Hrvatski studiji Sveučilišta u Zagrebu pokrenuti su i ustrojeni 16. studenoga 1992., isprva samo kao dvosemestralni Sveučilišni komparativni studij hrvatske filozofije i društva. Taj je program potom preoblikovan u program redovitog četverogodišnjeg studija.
